What is root canal treatment?
Microscope-assisted root canal treatment is a modern endodontic method that allows saving even severely damaged teeth from extraction. With high magnification, the dentist can precisely clean root canals and the tooth chamber.
This technique is invaluable for teeth with unusual shape or position, or those damaged mechanically. It’s also used to remove fractured instruments that sometimes occur during initial treatments. In many cases, this is the only procedure that preserves the natural tooth.
Indications for endodontic treatment
At our clinic, root canal therapy can save a tooth from extraction due to pulp inflammation. Pulp becomes infected due to:
- Advanced cavities
- Poorly treated decay
- Excessive tooth wear (often from bruxism)
- Severe mechanical trauma or fractures
Pulp infection is irreversible and causes intense pain due to nerve damage. Early treatment increases the chance of success.
Does it hurt?
Root canal treatment is performed under effective local anesthesia, making all stages completely painless. After treatment, the nerve is removed, so the tooth no longer causes pain. Mild soreness around the treated area can occur but subsides quickly or with pain relief medication.
Treatment duration depends on root anatomy, extent of damage, and patient factors. It may require one or several visits. Typically, microscope-assisted root canal treatment takes about one to two hours, though complex cases may need more time.
Retreatment (re‑endo)
If inflammation recurs, a retreatment (re‑endo) may be needed due to unnoticed canals, inadequate cleaning, or broken instruments. All procedures are guided by high‑quality X‑rays and advanced microscopy for maximum precision and minimal risk.
Cost
The cost depends on tooth anatomy (molars with up to four canals vs. front teeth). Microscope‑assisted treatment is more expensive than standard therapy but offers much greater precision and often is the last chance to save a badly damaged tooth. Retreatment adds further cost.
