Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is an essential part of preventive dentistry. The procedures involved aim not only to prevent tooth decay but also to restore the attractive appearance of teeth. Their goal is to remove deposits, plaque, and tartar. This treatment is performed on both children and adults.

What does dental hygiene involve?

Dental hygiene primarily involves the removal of surface deposits and tartar in a clinical setting. This procedure is a necessary complement to daily home oral hygiene.

Why is this important? Tartar, which is mineralized dental plaque, forms a hard crust that cannot be removed with standard home hygiene routines.

This layer is harmful to the oral environment and contributes to tooth decay and periodontal disease. Additionally, your smile loses its natural whiteness and charm.

Prolonged hygiene neglect often leads to the growth of harmful bacteria and tissue degradation caused by cariogenic bacteria. When left untreated, the only solution to save the tooth is often root canal treatment.

To avoid this, it’s worth regularly visiting your dentist for professional hygiene procedures. It’s a key element of prevention that helps you enjoy a beautiful and healthy smile for years.

Stages of oral hygiene

Dental hygiene consists of several short stages, each playing a specific role. Scaling is the removal of tartar. It can be performed manually or mechanically, depending on the case.

After scaling, air polishing is done to remove surface stains. A special powder mixed with water is sprayed with compressed air to reach difficult areas, especially interdental spaces.

Air polishing is particularly recommended for people who consume large amounts of coffee, tea, or smoke. Interestingly, air polishing often improves tooth color slightly and is typically performed before other cosmetic procedures.

Tooth polishing is the second-to-last stage. Its goal is to smooth the outer surfaces of teeth for extra shine and resistance to new plaque buildup.

This is done using a special electric brush and polishing paste. It’s the shortest step in the entire hygiene procedure.

The final, but crucial, step is fluoridation. Fluoride, usually in the form of flavored foam, is applied inside the mouth using a dental tray. A few minutes and it’s done.

Fluoride is known as “liquid enamel.” It protects teeth from irritants and prevents decay.

Fluoridation also reduces tooth sensitivity, which makes it an important step before tooth whitening procedures.

Why is tartar removal important?

New plaque forms on teeth daily. If you drink coffee, tea, red wine, or juices—or if you smoke—regular brushing and rinsing are crucial. But even with consistent care, lapses in routine happen.

When that happens, plaque can harden within hours as minerals in your saliva trigger calcification. Once hardened, it can’t be removed with toothpaste alone.

Why is that a concern? Tartar is more than just a visual flaw. It’s a common cause of bad breath (halitosis), gum inflammation, and tooth sensitivity. These issues can negatively affect your well-being and self-confidence.

A dental hygienist can eliminate all of these problems in just one visit. Scaling is painless and completely non-invasive—just like the rest of the procedure.
